4 connect the disposal to the p trap. The main drain pipe and the dishwasher drain pipe. Whether you re replacing a garbage disposal or installing one for the first time it will attach to the sink and have a discharge that attaches to the drainpipe. So right now we are going to hook it up.

Turn clockwise until the disposal is locked into place. Turn the lower ring clockwise until the disposal is supported by the mounting assembly. Before connecting the dishwasher and the garbage disposal you will need to insert a screwdriver into the nozzle of the hose and use a hammer to gently push out the knockout plug into the nozzle.

Tighten it until the disposal stays in place. If you get the first type you will need two short pieces of 1 1 2. Drip some bright food coloring into the garbage disposal. Wipe the pipes off with a dry rag and watch for a leak.

A garbage disposal has two possible connecting points. Dishwasher drain hoses can be connected to the garbage disposal in different ways. Run water through the garbage disposal and determine where the leak is coming from. And finally if your dishwasher is connected to your garbage disposal then it should have an air break which is a device that prevents dirty water from your drain piping from ever being siphoned back into your dishwasher.

If you have a septic system you ll need to purchase a septic safe disposal. Virtually every hardware store will have a vast array of pvc drain pipes to fit your plumbing project. Adapters are made to be glued onto the end of a pipe while others are made to be glued directly into a fitting such as the wye used here. If you have a dishwasher then your garbage disposal will have a connection port where the discharge pipe from the dishwasher will connect.
