Garbage Disposal Wall Switch Wiring

This method may be upgraded where a surface mounted receptacle outlet may be installed under the sink and a plug and cord may be installed on the garbage disposal.

If you do not already have the necessary switch controlled wall receptacle outlet adding this wiring is a job best done by a licensed electrician since it involves running cable and making connections at the main service panel. The black wire from the power source will go on the bottom screw. The diagram below shows the power entering the circuit at the grounded outlet box location then sending power up to the switch and a switched leg back down to the outlet.

Loop the exposed end of the 12 3 cable s red wire around the brass screw. The bare copper wire will screw onto the green screw on the switch. Most codes require that the garbage disposal must be served by a dedicated circuit that powers no other outlets or appliances. You can use any kind of switch for your garbage disposal as long as it has set on and off positions. The black wire from the disposal will go on the top screw.

Tighten the screw with a screwdriver to secure the wire to the switch. Wire in the switch with the black wires only. In this episode i wire up a new switch and outlet for a new garbage disposal.
