Is it alright for a gutter downspout from an upper roof to empty onto a lower roof. It depends on who you ask this question. Providing separate downspouts to the ground for upper and lower gutters moves water off the roof even faster. Perhaps your home is two or three stories tall or maybe you have a separate roof for your garage or porch.

Whether it s curved and tweaked so water exiting it flows across the roof pretty smoothly or splashes onto it with some force will also make a difference. There is no building code citation that forbids a gutter from draining onto a lower roof. So it s a matter of what the home inspector or contractor considers acceptable. Will the areas where you have upper downspouts pouring water into the gutters need to be secured with more gutter hangers or they should be good with the current hangers.

I have also honestly not had a chance to see how the lower gutter systems on the houses with the extended upper downspouts perform when all that water channeled off the upper roof is dumped. Sometimes gutters get installed so that they drain water away from one section onto the roof. When gutters and downspouts from an upper roof spill out onto a lower roof damage can occur to fiberglass asphalt shingles. Erosion might be visible in 1 2 years or less or potentially be less severe all depending on the amount.
